What Size Wedding Dress Should I Order? A Guide to Bridal Sizing

You found your wedding dress. 🎉 You’re standing there loving it, everyone is excited, and then your bridal consultant asks to take your measurements.

And suddenly there’s a new question:

What size wedding dress should I order?

If bridal sizing feels confusing, you are definitely not alone.

Maybe you normally wear one size in your everyday clothes, but the wedding dress size chart says something completely different. Maybe your bust measures one size, your waist another and your hips another. Or maybe the sample wedding dress you fell in love with wasn’t even close to your normal size—but somehow it still looked amazing.

Welcome to bridal sizing. 🤍

The most important thing to know is this:

Your wedding dress size is simply a tool we use to get your gown as close as possible to your measurements before alterations. It is not a judgment about your body, and the number itself really doesn’t matter.

Let’s talk about how we determine which wedding dress size you should actually order.

How Does Wedding Dress Sizing Work?

Wedding dress sizing is different from shopping for everyday clothing.

There is no universal bridal size chart that every wedding dress designer follows. Each designer creates gowns based on their own patterns and measurements.

That means you could be one bridal size in an Essense of Australia wedding dress and measure differently in another designer.

And that is completely normal.

Rather than starting with the size you normally wear, we start with your actual measurements and the size chart for the designer of the wedding dress you’re purchasing.

Typically, we’ll look at measurements including:

  • Bust
  • Waist
  • Hips

Then we compare those measurements to the designer’s wedding dress size chart.

But—and this is important—that still isn’t always the end of the conversation.

What Size Wedding Dress Should I Order?

The short answer?

You should order the wedding dress size that gives you and your alterations professional the best starting point for your specific gown and your measurements.

Notice we didn’t say, “Order whatever size matches your largest measurement.”

We also didn’t say, “Order two sizes larger than your normal clothing size.”

Those can be useful generalizations, but wedding dresses are much more nuanced than that.

When we recommend a wedding dress size, we’re looking at:

  • Your measurements
  • The designer’s size chart
  • The silhouette of the gown
  • Where the dress is fitted
  • The fabric
  • How much stretch the fabric has
  • Bodice construction
  • Bust structure and cups
  • The back closure
  • Where alterations are likely to be needed

In other words, we’re sizing the dress—not judging your body based on a number.

What If My Bust, Waist and Hips Are Different Bridal Sizes?

They probably will be!

Seriously.

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding dress sizing is that your bust, waist and hip measurements are somehow supposed to neatly fall into one column on a size chart.

Human bodies don’t work that way.

You may have a bust measurement that corresponds with one bridal size, a waist that corresponds with another and hips that correspond with a third.

That is incredibly common.

This is where understanding the construction of your wedding dress becomes important.

Example: An A-Line or Ballgown Wedding Dress

Let’s say your waist measures into one size but your hips measure into a larger size.

If your wedding dress has a full A-line or ballgown skirt that doesn’t fit closely through the hips, your hip measurement may not be the deciding factor.

Example: A Fitted Wedding Dress

Now take those exact same measurements and put them into a fitted crepe or mermaid wedding dress.

Suddenly the hip measurement matters a lot more because the gown is designed to follow your body through that area.

Same bride.

Same measurements.

Completely different sizing considerations.

This is exactly why we don’t believe wedding dress sizing should be reduced to one universal rule.

What If I’m Between Two Wedding Dress Sizes?

Being between bridal sizes is incredibly normal.

If one size feels a little too small on the chart and the next size seems a little larger than you need, we’ll look at the construction of your gown and talk through the options with you.

There are several things we may consider:

Where are you between sizes?

Being between sizes in the bust might require a different conversation than being between sizes through the hips.

What fabric is the wedding dress?

A structured Mikado gown behaves very differently from a wedding dress made from a fabric with stretch.

How is the bodice constructed?

A gown with internal corsetry, boning or a lace-up back may give us different options than a gown with a structured zipper closure.

What can reasonably be altered?

Your alterations professional will ultimately customize your wedding dress to your body, so we’re also thinking about which size gives them the best foundation to work from.

In many cases, taking a gown in is more straightforward than trying to create room that isn’t there.

But even that doesn’t mean “always order the bigger size” is the right answer.

The dress matters.

That’s why this is a conversation—not a formula.

Should I Order a Smaller Wedding Dress If I’m Planning to Lose Weight?

This is one of the questions we hear most often.

And our recommendation is pretty simple:

Order your wedding dress for the body you have when we take your measurements.

We don’t recommend ordering a smaller gown based on anticipated weight loss.

Bodies change for all sorts of reasons between ordering a wedding dress and walking down the aisle. Trying to predict exactly what your measurements will be months from now can create unnecessary stress.

If your measurements do change after your dress is ordered, that’s something you and your alterations professional can evaluate once the gown arrives.

Your wedding dress should fit you.

You shouldn’t have to change yourself to fit your wedding dress.

Now, if you’ve already lost – let’s say 45 pounds – and you are planning on loosing 25 more, we’ll talk through that. Because you’re in the middle of a weight loss, it’s a different conversation.

It’s a nuanced conversation on top of a nuanced conversation!

Why Does My Bridal Size Sound So Much Bigger Than My Normal Size?

This is probably the part of bridal sizing that gets the biggest reaction.

You normally buy one size in your everyday clothing…

…and suddenly your wedding dress is several numbers different.

Nothing happened to your body between walking into the bridal shop and getting measured. 😊

You’re simply shopping within a different sizing system.

Even everyday women’s clothing isn’t standardized from brand to brand. Bridal designers have their own measurement charts as well.

So when your consultant says a particular bridal size is the best size to order, try not to attach meaning to that number.

It isn’t a grade.

It isn’t a goal.

It isn’t something anyone at your wedding will ever know.

It is literally an ordering number.

Does My Wedding Dress Need to Fit Perfectly When It Arrives?

No—and this is a really important part of wedding dress shopping that brides don’t always realize.

Wedding dresses are expected to need alterations.

Your gown is being ordered in a standard designer size. Your body, however, isn’t a standardized dress form.

Alterations are what take the wedding dress from “this is the closest designer size to my measurements” to “this dress fits me.”

Common wedding dress alterations can include:

  • Hemming the gown
  • Shortening straps
  • Adjusting the bust
  • Taking in the waist
  • Adjusting the hips on a fitted gown
  • Creating a bustle
  • Fine-tuning the neckline or bodice fit

So if your wedding dress arrives and there is some extra room somewhere, don’t panic.

That’s exactly what alterations are for.

What If the Wedding Dress Sample Doesn’t Fit Me?

This is another place where bridal shopping is completely different from regular shopping.

When you walk into a clothing store, you expect to grab your size from the rack.

A bridal boutique simply cannot stock every wedding dress in every size.

Instead, we carry wedding dress samples in a range of bridal sizes and use those samples to help you discover what you love.

That may mean the sample is:

  • Too big and needs to be clipped
  • Too small and can’t completely close
  • A great fit in your bust but loose through your waist
  • Perfect through your waist but snug through your hips

None of those things automatically mean the dress isn’t right for you.

Your consultant can help you understand what the gown will look like when it’s ordered closer to your measurements.

So please don’t eliminate a wedding dress simply because the sample size isn’t your size.

The sample is there to help you fall in love with the dress.

Then we’ll figure out the sizing. And for my visual brides, we’ll carefully clip the dress in whichever way is needed to help you visualize what it will look like when you exact dress comes in. This can even mean conversations on where the neckline or waist hits your frame!

Can a Wedding Dress Be Ordered With Different Bust Cup Sizes?

Sometimes!

And this is another reason working with someone who really understands the designer matters.

Depending on the wedding dress and designer, there may be options beyond simply choosing a gown size.

Some designers offer options such as different cup sizes, bodice variations or other construction changes that can help us create a better starting point for certain body proportions.

Those options vary by designer and dress, so this is something we’ll look at specifically when you’re ordering your gown.

Can Wedding Dresses Be Ordered With Split Sizing?

In some cases, certain wedding dress designers may offer special sizing options or pattern adjustments.

Availability depends entirely on the designer and gown.

If your measurements vary significantly between your bust, waist and hips, we’ll look at every option available for your specific dress and help you understand which choice makes the most sense.

This is exactly why ordering a wedding dress isn’t the same as clicking your usual size online.

There are a lot of tiny details happening behind the scenes—and thankfully, you don’t have to figure them out by yourself.

Should I Buy a Wedding Dress Based on the Size on the Tag?

Nope.

And if we could erase one worry from wedding dress shopping forever, it might be this one.

Do not let the number sewn inside your wedding dress determine how you feel about yourself in it.

Your wedding dress size isn’t going to be printed on your invitations.

Your photographer isn’t going to photograph the tag.

Your guests won’t know it.

Your partner won’t know it.

And five years from now, when you’re looking at your wedding photos, you certainly aren’t going to be thinking about the number that was inside your gown.

You’re going to remember how you felt.

What Size Wedding Dress Should I Try On at My Bridal Appointment?

Another common question!

You do not need to know your bridal size before your wedding dress appointment.

That’s our job.

At One Fine Day Bridal, our consultants will guide you through the process and will select wedding dress samples that allow you to explore different silhouettes, fabrics and styles.

Sometimes the best dress for you to try isn’t technically “your size.” What we will do is show you styles that you feel comfortable in and then clip them to give you the end affect.

What matters is whether we can help you visualize the gown correctly and determine whether the style feels like you.

Wedding dress shopping is about discovering your dress—not hunting through racks for a particular number.

The Most Important Thing to Know About Wedding Dress Sizing

If you remember nothing else from this entire article, remember this:

Your wedding dress size is information—not an evaluation of your body.

We use measurements and a designer’s size chart to determine the best starting point for your gown.

Then a talented alterations professional makes that wedding dress fit you.

Not the other way around.

So when you find your wedding dress and we start talking about measurements and sizing, please don’t let a number take away from the moment.

You just found the dress you’re going to wear when you get married.

THAT’S the part worth remembering. 🤍
